I have a new friend on my balcony this afternoon. I enjoy watching the birds in the trees around my home. There are plenty of 🐦birds plenty to watch. However, I'd like this guy to go munch on his dinner somewhere else, as he is making a huge mess 😂

It certainly has given me food for thought and some great ideas on how to improve my workshop. It is a great book.

I love my urban home - my sanctuary. I am blessed

I love my urban home - my sanctuary. I am blessed with a large balcony that I can sit outside and enjoy. Currently, I am trying different plants to bring nature a bit closer with some success and some failures😁

I hope my bamboo will grow and thicken to give me more privacy.

Now lockdown restrictions have eased, I am enjoying entertaining.

Enjoying a Float - it was wonderful taking an hour

Enjoying a Float - it was wonderful taking an hour to relax in zero gravity. It was my attempt to empty my mind (something I find hard to do as my mind tends to go at the speed of light). I just love the way floating helps you achieve a level of relaxation that is difficult to achieve.

Before the float, I spent 45 minutes in an infrared sauna. This was my first time in the infrared sauna - I didn't think I'd enjoy it, but I was wrong. It was fabulous. The infrared sauna is supposed to help with Detoxification | Circulation | Relaxation | Pain Relief. It just felt really good.

I left after the infrared sauna and float feeling completely relaxed.

It was wonderful spending some time on mindfulness (something I need to do more of).

Okay it’s been about 6 weeks since my last post

Okay it’s been about 6 weeks since my last post on going grey. Having dyed my hair in the past a deep brown - the contrast between the brown and the grey was stark.

So as a compromise, Mel my wonderful hair dresser (and Aunt to my kids) suggested lightening the colour at a big risk of damaging my hair and blending it with foils. Also Mel cut a significant amount off the length as she said it would take years to grow out.

It took me a little while to get used to the new colour - but now I love it. It is softer and blends better. My hair initially didn’t like the new colour and felt a little straw like.

Now however it now feels soft. I am using Nuk purple shampoo to stop the new colour yellowing and a leave in conditioner on the ends.

I am exited to see how the new look progresses.

2021 has been a big year for me as an author. I finally finished Preparing for Birth: Mothers 6th edition. I am so happy about the success of this new edition. In a short time since August 2021, we've sold over >2000 copies.

As a follow up from Preparing for Birth: Mothers I've started working on our Desk set chart series. So far I've finished Desk Set Charts: Pregnancy and Desk Set Charts: Labour and Birth. Both have been printed read and uploaded to Birth International's website. I am currently working on Desk Set Charts: Technical Series. Stay tuned. I love working with the wonderful artists @holly_reads_writes_creates and @vesela.nenkova

I just love the colours of spring💙. Walking in Parramatta Park I found a carpet of purple and just had to stop to take a photo. Even the rain couldn't diminish their beauty. What a love start to Sunday.

Last Friday in the pouring rain - I took part in

Last Friday in the pouring rain - I took part in the Coleman Greig Virtual Challenge as part of Westmead Hospital's team to raise money for St Gabriel’s School and the Westmead Hospital Foundation.

While I was initially reluctant to venture out in such poor weather, I am so glad I did. Around 10 midwives and doctors took part in the challenge to raise money.

It's fantastic to be involved with an effort or inclination to increase the well-being of others.

My balcony garden is blossoming. I am trying lots of different plants to see what works best. It brings me joy to see the growing plants and their colour as I gaze out my windows. I am blessed to have ceiling to floor windows to help me keep connected to nature within a highly built-up area.

Finding joy can only truly exist in the now and be part of everyday life.

Finally back at the gym. I've missed being able to exercise. Earlier this year I had surgery on my ankle to repair a ligament causing a major hiccup in my exercise routine. Following the surgery, I experienced a series of injuries and of course, the gyms were closed due to COVID-19.
Gyms are open - yah! Now I've been given the go-ahead to start exercising cautiously. I am so unfit but keen to get back into it.

In the height of the COVID-19 lockdown, I craved contact with nature. I live in a second-story apartment. My home didn't have many plants. I am not a gardener (in fact I thought I had a black thumb - instead of a green one). So to increase the nature around my home, I decided to create a balcony garden. My decision was made difficult as I couldn't just duck off to the local nursery to purchase plants.

I learned that you can order live plants online and have them delivered. I found a cottage plant nursery online and ordered 5 tubes of different flowering plants. They arrived in dubious condition due to postage delays. However, I went ahead and planted them.

To my surprise, all 5 are surviving in my less than knowledgeable care. While not perfect they add nature and colour to my balcony.

This flower is the first flower on my Dianthus Wathams Beauty. There are so many flower buds that I can't wait to see them in full bloom. This is supposedly a hardy plant - it will have to be under my care.

On Sunday I had the most wonderful day. With the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, I planned a family day at Darling Harbour. It was a beautiful spring day - warm and sunny.

I jumped on a train to travel into the city. I was pleasantly surprised that the number of people was low. I expected lots of people to take advantage of the beautiful day.

Even better was the ability not to wear a mask in an outdoor area. So freeing.

My beautiful granddaughter Lillian having a ball in the water at Darling Harbour. Mind you the water was very cold and she came out shivering. In true style, she declined a jumper even as her lips went blue.

Darling Harbour has a great water park for kids. Even better on the weekend, there were not too many people.

Okay - I've been agonising over this for months. I

Okay - I've been agonising over this for months. I think it's time to let my hair show its true colour - grey. I've been dying my hair for years - every 4 to 6 weeks (my hair grows fast) I have to sit still for 2+ hours (and yes I do not like to sit still) to have my hair recoloured. It's not only the time it takes - it's the chemical involved.

I've always promoted natural health and avoided harsh chemicals in my home. Yet I regularly put chemicals in my hair. Alongside my internal debating, I've discussed this issue with many women and almost overwhelming they choose to continue to colour their hair.

Okay, I think it's time. I am going to let my natural hair colour shine through. I am seeing my hairdresser tomorrow to hopefully blend it into my dark coloured dyed hair.

I am used to being a very active person. To aid my

I am used to being a very active person. To aid my mental health I play hockey, walk and go to the gym. This year has been challenging with the second round of COVID-19 lockdowns. No gym or hockey.

In addition, I've had surgery on my ankle (I managed to snap a ligament) followed by removal of suspicious moles (got to love the Australian sun). The net result is a significant reduction in my ability to participate in physical activities.

The unfortunate result of my inactivity is a reduction in my happiness levels. Happiness is essential to mental health.

Today is World Mental Health Day. This got me to think about what I can do to improve my own mental health. So I've set myself goals for this week.

My new bike (pictured here with Parramatta river in the background) is the key. This week I plan to ride to my clinic instead of using my car. I can enjoy an increase in physical activity (and happiness) and decrease the impact on the environment.

Wow, this year certainly has been the year of chan

Wow, this year certainly has been the year of change for me. I stopped attending births on the 30th of June 2021. This decision hasn't been an easy one. Attending births (particularly homebirths) has been a major part of my life. It's been a wonderful, challenging, awe-inspiring and fascinating 24 years.

💙My community sent me so much love as I ventured into the new chapter of my life. Thank you, Kristyn and Homebirth New South Wales for my wonderful farewell gifts @consciouslycraftedau @homebirthnewsouthwales

It’s almost the end of week one of my get health

It’s almost the end of week one of my get healthy project. I am already starting to feel better in myself.

I’m enjoying yummy home cooked foods and lots of fresh salads.

At 7pm I just finished a workout with a trainer and a small group of friendly and keen fellow group trainees. I am pretty hot and sweaty in this photo.

Since Monday I’ve had a one on one PT session, attended a boxing class, went for a walk around a local part and tonight’s group training. Rest day tomorrow.

Next I am looking to buy a bike to enjoy the local cycle ways.

The beginning of my wellness journey. At 56 years

The beginning of my wellness journey. At 56 years of age I’ve spent my life with my weight fluctuating significantly. Some emotional eating is involved and a fondness for wine doesn’t help.

I’d gain weight, then diet and exercise madly. Loose weight, feel great and maintain it for a while and then the cycle would start again. Weight would slowly creep on.

I want this time to be different. I’m not sure how I will achieve it. But I am going to really try. I plan to record my journey.
