On the 19th February 2017 Jane Palmer Private Practice Midwife, Lactation Consultant and Childbirth Educator celebrated 20 years as a registered midwife. During this time Jane has seen visiting rights to hospitals been taken away due to the HIH insurance collapse and the subsequent loss of professional indemnity (PI) insurance, the introduction of direct entry midwifery degrees, introduction of Medicare payments for midwifery services, the government supported PI insurance product and the reintroduction of visiting access to hospitals. There have been more challenges than wins in the last 20 years and lots more ground needs be be gained by midwives in Australia. Even so, there are many opportunities ahead for midwifery
